From time to time, the bookmobile needs to undergo repairs. When these repairs conflict with a scheduled stop, the staff will still be at the stop, even though the bookmobile can’t be. We’ll bring your holds and a selection of other books that you can check out, and we’ll work from a table set up in the space where we normally park.
Hazardous driving conditions may force us to cancel a bookmobile stop. If this happens, we’ll notify all the San Antonio Public Library branches that we’ve had to cancel. In the event of inclement weather, we recommend calling Central Library at (210) 207-2500 or any San Antonio Public Library branch before coming out to the bookmobile stop.
Renewing Items Checked Out on the Bookmobile
Items borrowed from the bookmobile can be renewed once, for an additional three weeks, by bringing the item to the bookmobile. You can also renew items by calling Central Library at (210) 207-2500. Have your library card number ready. Be sure to tell the staff that you’re a bookmobile patron so that the new due date can be adjusted to match the date that the bookmobile will next visit your stop.
Items that are on hold for another patron can’t be renewed.
Placing Holds
You can get on the waiting list for a popular item by placing it on hold. Or if a branch library has an item you want to borrow, you can place a hold on it and have it sent to the bookmobile.
To place a hold, call Central Library at (210) 207-2500. Have your library card number ready, as well as the title and author of the item. Inform the staff at which bookmobile location you want to pick up the item. You can also place holds by accessing your account through our website.
Please be aware: for popular items, there may be a long wait. Please also be aware: due to the limitations of our computer system, we are unable to send notices of hold arrivals to bookmobile patrons.
Requesting a Bookmobile Appearance at a Public Event
Please read these guidelines before submitting a request. Please note: we are not able to attend events outside Bexar County, nor events that take place on an official City of San Antonio holiday.
--The bookmobile is a library on wheels, carrying approximately 3,500 books, books-on-CD, VHS tapes, DVDs and other media. Items range from board books for infants to Large Print books.
--The bookmobile’s primary purpose is to bring library services to Bexar County residents who, due to distance, age, or disability, are unable to visit a library branch.
--As scheduling permits, we accept requests for our bookmobile to appear at community events, such as National Night Out, job fairs, district fairs and literacy fairs. No fee is charged for this service; however, please be aware that the number of special appearances the bookmobile can make is very limited, due to the bookmobile’s service schedule.
--Visitors to the bookmobile can register for library cards, check out library materials and place holds.
--Our 32-foot-long bookmobile requires at least 40 feet of parking space.
--The bookmobile has its own generator and does not require electrical power.
--The bookmobile has a wheelchair ramp.
--Requests for appearances must be submitted at least four weeks in advance.
